Dolphins Coaches Have Struggled Since Don Shula…

The Miami Dolphins have fired head coach Tony Sparano after the team dropped to 4-9 on the 2011 season. Sparano won a division title in 2008 but has regressed since then. The head coaching job in Miami has not been that strong since Don Shula left in 1995. Since that time, Miami has been to the playoffs just six times and won just three playoff games. They have also gone through five head coaches since Shula left. That number does not count interim coaches. Here is a look at how the head coaches at Miami have fared since Shula retired.

Tony Sparano

Sparano took the Miami job in 2008 and led them to an AFC East title. The Dolphins improved by 10 wins in his first season. Miami lost in its first playoff game and hasn’t been back since. He went 7-9 the following two seasons and was fired with a 4-9 record in 2011. Overall, he went 29-32 as the head coach with the Dolphins.

Cam Cameron

Cameron was the head coach at Miami for just one season in 2007. Unfortunately, it was the worst one in franchise history. The Dolphins started the season 0-13 before they finally picked up a win in overtime against the Baltimore Ravens. They lost their final two games to finish 1-15. With a new front office taking over after that, Cameron was promptly fired as the head coach. He has not gotten a head coaching job since.

Nick Saban

Saban famously coached Miami for two seasons. After signing a big contract to leave LSU, Saban ultimately left Miami for a big contract at Alabama. His two seasons with the Dolphins were mixed. In 2005, he led the Dolphins to a winning season but missed the playoffs. The team regressed in 2006. Miami finished a disappointing 6-10 and that was it for Saban.

Dave Wannstedt

Wannstedt took over the head coaching job in the 2000 season. He led Miami to an 11-5 record in each of his first two seasons. Miami won a playoff game in 2000 before losing. They lost their only playoff game in 2001. After that, Wannstedt put up two winning seasons but missed the playoffs. After starting out 1-8 in 2004, he was fired. Overall, he went 42-31 with Miami.

Jimmy Johnson

Johnson had college glory in Miami and NFL glory with the Dallas Cowboys. But he wasn’t able to recapture any glory when he took the Miami job in 1996. Johnson coached the Dolphins for four seasons and reached the playoffs three times. He went 36-28 in his four seasons and had between eight and 10 wins in each of them. His final game was a 62-7 loss in the divisional playoffs to the Jacksonville Jaguars.e HH

Dolphins signing Garrard to replace injured Henne?

David GarrardThe 0-4 Miami Dolphins will now be without quarterback Chad Henne(notes) for some time due to a separated shoulder. A source to the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel says he may be done for the season, which leaves Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano with 27-year-old Matt Moore(notes) at quarterback.

Moore completed 17 of the 26 passes he threw in the one game he’s played in for the Fins this season, none of them for touchdowns. And one of those errant passes went for an interception.

The Dolphins “spent Tuesday searching for a veteran quarterback to supplement” Moore, the Miami Herald reports. Former Jacksonville Jaguars starter David Garrard(notes) and former NFL starter Jake Delhomme(notes) “rejected initial overtures because the Dolphins were unwilling to guarantee their salary for the entire season,” the paper notes.

Delhomme won’t be signing on with Miami, according to the Herald, but Garrard is “still open to the possibility.”

Dolphins meet with free-agent QBs

Updated Oct 4, 2011 3:25 PM ET

The Miami Dolphins have been holding talks with free-agent quarterbacks David Garrard and Jake Delhomme, the NFL Network reported Tuesday.

The 0-4 Dolphins are exploring the possibility of adding depth at the quarterback position with starter Chad Henne suffering from a shoulder injury, according to the report.

So far, neither of the two veteran free agents have been able to come to terms on a deal with the team, sources told NFL Network.

The Dolphins were continuing their pursuit of Garrard on Tuesday, sources said. He is believed to be on the radar of several teams.

Garrard, who was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars just before the start of the regular season, started 58 of 64 games for the Jaguars over the past four seasons. He passed for 2,734 yards and 23 touchdowns while throwing 15 interceptions in 2010.

Delhomme served as a backup for the Cleveland Browns last year after playing seven seasons with Carolina, where he led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2003.

Miami Dolphins up next: New England Patriots

When: Sunday, 1 p.m., CBS

Matchup Dolphins should exploit: Brandon Marshall. All day, all the time. He is 83 yards from his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard season and 10 receptions from setting the Dolphins club record for catches in a season ( O.J. McDuffie’s 90, set in 1998). Barring injury, if both aren’t achieved Sunday, it would be shocking. They should target him 18-20 times. In the past two weeks, Marshall has one drop among the 22 passes that have reached his hands, piling up 208 yards and a touchdown. The one negative this season has been the evaporation of his yards gained after the catch (YAC), as it has dropped more than 50 percent from last year’s 5.0-yard average, plummeting to 2.4 yards per catch this season.

Matchup that should concern Dolphins: Danny Woodhead. Hard to tell who Bill Belicheck is going to run out there in what amounts to a glorified exhibition game for a team that has already clinched home-field advantage through the AFC playoffs, so let’s go with the diminutive sparkplug that the Jets released early in the season. He’s that sort of player that Belichick and Tom Brady make into millionaires, like Rumpelstiltskin spinning hay into gold: he’s quick, elusive, smart and coachable. And with the major issues the Dolphins have had in a few games with backs and tight ends in the passing game, Woodhead and rookie tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski (21 TDs among the trio) could run wild.

Overall: If Tom Brady starts, he would be protecting a 27-hame home winning streak in games he has started. … The losses to the Bills and Lions are made all the more painful in that the Dolphins, at 9-6, would have been alive for the playoffs headed into this game in which the Patriots will be resting players. … Perhaps it’s not such a surprise that outside linebacker Cameron Wake, who should be named to the Pro Bowl Tuesday night, has no sacks and just one quarterback hit, in his past two games. In home games this season, Wake had only five of his 14 sacks and averaged a profootballfocus.com grade of 1.8 per game at Sun Life Stadium. His PFF grade on the road has been 3.2 per game on average. … Sean Smith, propelled by a strong run defense grade, has vaulted to fourth in the PFF rankings of NFL cornerbacks. … An update on Dolphins opponents for 2011: No too much changed last weekend, though, Tennessee’s loss to Kansas City ensured that the Dolphins cannot play Jacksonville on the schedule. It is still likely the Dolphins will play in Cleveland, though that AFC North road game could switch to Cincinnati if the Bengals shock everyone and beat 11-4 Baltimore while the Browns lose at home to 11-4 Pittsburgh. The AFC South team the Dolphins will host will either be 6-9 Tennessee or Houston (5-10). If the Texans defeat 8-7 Jacksonville at Reliant Stadium and the Titans lose at 9-6 Indianapolis, Houston will bring its super-talented squad to South Florida. Otherwise Tennessee, the only team Miami beat at home in 2010, will make a return visit. Previously determined 2011 home opponents: Patriots, Jets, Bills, Raiders, Broncos, Redskins, Eagles. Previously determined 2011 road opponents: Patriots, Jets, Bills, Chargers, Chiefs, Giants, Cowboys. There is also the possibility there will be an additional road and home game if an 18-game season is implemented starting next season. … If Dolphins win, they will match the 1972 and 1984 teams for the most road wins in a season. The Perfectos went 7-0, and Marino was 7-1 on the road in his record-setting year.
