| Miami Dolphins: Team wants more | |
MIAMI GARDENS — Before linebacker Karlos Dansby could respond, teammate Kevin Burnett decided to answer the question for him. Dansby was asked if this was the best the defense had played this season. Burnett, dressing in the locker next to Dansby’s, quickly blurted out, “No.” Nope,” Dansby followed. “We still left a lot of plays out there. We let them get six points and we really wanted to shut them out. That was our mindset going into the game and we didn’t get the job done.” And there you have it. The Dolphins are not only playing with confidence, but also getting nitpicky about their wins. That was the most telling story about this victory. Guys were happy, yet already thinking about what they could’ve done to make the performance even better. After the game, running back Reggie Bush was complimentary of the offense putting up 28 points. He then dropped this line, “We would have liked to put together a few more drives toward the end of the game …” It was as if the Dolphins were doing their post-game interviews after they had already broken down the game film. That attitude is why the Dolphins can keep this “loose” locker-room atmosphere and not have to worry about complacency. Quarterback Matt Moore put together perhaps his most efficient game of the season. His performance for the time being should put an end to the “Suck For Luck” campaign. Maybe his slogan should be “Do You Want Moore?” Still, Moore was kicking himself for the plays he didn’t make Sunday. “Well, I missed a couple there in the second half that kind of bummed me out a little bit,” he said. “I can’t do that.” A short week is probably the best thing for the Dolphins. There’s little time to celebrate, with just a few days before Thursday’s game at Dallas. As coach Tony Sparano put it, he will smile about the Buffalo victory sometime Sunday night while breaking down Cowboys film. “Obviously, we want to put our mean face back on and get ready for Dallas,” defensive end Jared Odrick said. | Miami Dolphins’ end Jared Odrick enjoying ‘rookie…
Allen Eyestone/The Palm Beach Post
By Brian Biggane Palm Beach Post Staff Writer DAVIE — The Dolphins’ two most prolific sack specialists make no effort to hide their feelings about the way defensive end Jared Odrick chooses to celebrate his sacks. “Terrible,” Jason Taylor said. “He’s embarrassing himself.” “The worst,” Cameron Wake added. “… I’ve told him, but he doesn’t seem to listen.” Odrick makes no apologies for what he calls the “Pee Wee Herman,” mimicking the dance the comedian did for years to the soundtrack of Tequila. “It’s unfortunate they can’t support me and my dancing,” Odrick said with a straight face. “But it’s something I like and my family likes, so I’m going to keep doing it.” Taylor, the NFL’s active sack leader with 127, vowed after Sunday’s game that he and the defense would let Odrick know that his antics had to stop. By Thursday, they backed off. “He got his feelings hurt when we said we didn’t like it,” said Taylor, who has three sacks this season. “Some guys are sensitive so we left it alone. If you keep making plays he can do whatever dance he wants.” Miami’s first-round pick in the 2010 draft, Odrick injured his leg during last year’s season-opener. When he suffered another injury in practice while preparing to return, his season was over. “This is like my rookie season,” he said. “So it’s been a learning experience; it’s always a learning experience, whether you’re a first-year guy or a 10th-year guy. You’re always learning something. If you’re not learning and correcting mistakes you’re going backward, no matter how old you are.” Numbers don’t tell much of a story for the 6-foot-5, 304-pounder. In Miami’s 3-4 scheme the linemen are often asked to occupy blockers and open lanes for linebackers to make tackles. But eighth-year pro Randy Starks said he’s seen Odrick make steady improvement. “He’s getting off blocks, making plays,” Starks said. “He was doing everything right before, but maybe he was a half-step late. Now when he’s in position to make a play, he makes it.” “He’s starting to show up more and more every game,” coach Tony Sparano added. “He’s making a factor play (every) game. This week a big sack, a tackle for loss, couple games ago a sack.” Odrick thrust himself into the spotlight in the season opener against New England, when he grabbed a batted Tom Brady pass and took it 39 yards before being tackled. On top of that he’s totaled 11 tackles, including three for losses, four quarterback hits and one pass defensed, in addition to his three sacks. “He’s doing a good job,” said Taylor, who often lines up off Odrick’s right shoulder. “He’s got a lot to learn, and he’d be the first to tell you that. But the athleticism, the emotion, the passion, the intensity he plays with, those are showing very quickly, and the more reps he gets and chance to use his skill set the better he’ll do. “He’s got to tone it down a little sometimes. He gets riled up and hard on himself, which is good to see, that drive to do well He’s like one of those wild horses: You let him run and play off him.” It looks as if it’ll be awhile before anyone corrals Odrick’s sack dance. Wake clearly struggles with the idea that those in charge of the Sun Life sound system are now playing Tequila when Odrick breaks into his dance, and that fans seem to be catching on. “One time was good,” Wake said. “Now it, oh, he’s doing it again? Next time he starts into it I’m going to push him out of the way.” “It’s unique and it’s original,” Odrick said. “I’ve got my own theme song out there now, so I’ve got to keep it going.” If anybody needs tickets to games, remember to click the tickets link at the top. |

| Miami Dolphins: Is Vontae Davis’ hamstring… | |
The Miami Dolphins have a laundry list of injured players this week, but it appears all but one was healthy enough to practice on Thursday.
Will Vontae Davis be healthy enough to play against the Giants? Starting cornerback Vontae Davis, who re-aggravated his hamstring injury in last Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos, apparently sat out his second straight practice to rest the hamstring strain. Nolan Carroll, who is also nursing a hamstring pull, filled in as a the starting cornerback. If Davis doesn’t play it’s likely that Carroll will start his third game of the season, and rookie Jimmy Wilson will be worked into the playing rotation. Davis missed two games earlier this season resting the hamstring pull he suffered against the Texans on Sept. 18. The Dolphins secondary struggled without him, but the strained hamstring could limit his ability to run full speed and change directions. On the positive side…. Tailback Daniel Thomas, who has been battling a hamstring injury of his own all season, returned to practice. The Dolphins also got starting right tackle Marc Colombo and offensive guard Richie Incognito back. It’s uncertain if their participation was limited. Both worked in their regular starting role. The Dolphins will need the starting offensive line at full strength because the New York Giants, Sunday’s opponent, are one of the most forceful passing rushing teams in the NFL. The Giants, which have registered 22 sacks, are able to bring pressure without blitzing regularly. That’s not good for an offensive line that’s allowed 22 sacks in six games. Also practicing were starting tailback Reggie Bush (neck), free safety Reshad Jones (knee), and defensive endKendall Langford (hip). Safety Chris Clemons (hamstring), defensive endJared Odrick (knee) and quarterback Matt Moore (ribs) also practiced without limitations. That’s all the news for today. | Miami Dolphins training camp report (Aug. 5)
DAVIE— The following are updates from the Miami Dolphins training camp practice at the team’s training facility on the Nova Southeastern University campus: – Dolphins running another team period and Kevin Burnett is in there, paired with Dansby. – Kevin Burnett just got hurt during 11-on-11. He appears fine. A trainer isn’t even attending to him. He’s talking to Wake, Dansby while resting. – Just watched Lydon Murtha pancake Jason Taylor. He’s pushing guys around today. – Jimmy Wilson just popped Brooks Foster in the back, making him drop a pretty solid pass from Matt Moore. Foster caught the next pass. – Clyde Gates just ran into the gate after a floater took him out of bounds. Fans cheered when he got up. – Jared Odrick just disrupted a pass from Pat Devlin with pressure. – Nolan Carroll broke up what would have been a big catch for Clyde Gates when he stripped the ball away. – Nate Ness dropped an interception. Matt Moore, who pushes his passes, threw a floated out there. – Tyrone Culver has been working with Chris Clemons most of the day. – Matt Moore fumbled a snap and Koa Misi would have been there to clean his clock. – Sean Smith deflected a Matt Moore pass to Patrick Carter. – Edmond Gates caught an in-route on Vontae Davis. Chad Henne on the throw. – Chad Henne threw a nice slant in the middle of the field to Davone Bess for a 20 yard gain during 7-on-7. – Pat Devlin hit Clyde Gates in the endzone during 7-on-7 but Gates dropped the pass. – Pat Devlin threw an interception right to Vontae Davis. – Kory Sheets is having a good day on inside run. He broke what would have been a big run. – Jared Odrick and Tony McDaniel seem to be a good pair. I wonder where Phillip Merling fits in. – John Jerry is being tried out as a starter on the flipside. – I totally forgot that Jason Taylor brings value to the team as a long snapper on special teams. – Clyde Gates just split a CB and S for what would be a TD pass. He can run the 9 route with ease. – OG Ray Feinga, who was working as the starting RG the first week of camp, is sitting out his third practice with an undisclosed injury. – Dolphins CB Will Allen has joined the rehab crew. – Brandon Marshall is not practicing today. – Well, it’s not Brett Favre, but Dolphins agreed to 1-year deal with QB Kevin O’Connell and cut Tom Brandstater. Not much else going on in the NFL world today.
